Highlight Photo GOV. EASLEY ANNOUNCES STATE AGREES TO PURCHASE GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN 9/29/2008
Gov. Mike Easley announced that the state of North Carolina has agreed to purchase Grandfather Mountain, one of the state’s premier signature landmarks, in Avery County from the Morton family and Grandfather Mountain Inc. Grandfather Mountain will be North Carolina’s 34th state park. The agreement sets a purchase price of $12 million for the 2,601-acre undeveloped portion of the tourist destination as well as a conservation easement on the remaining 604 acres that will be managed through a nonprofit entity by the heirs of Hugh Morton.

GOV. EASLEY ANNOUNCES $2.3 MILLION IN FEDERAL AMERICORPS GRANTS AVAILABLE 10/10/2008
Gov. Mike Easley today announced that more than $2.3 million in federal AmeriCorps grants are available for North Carolina nonprofits and government agencies that work to address education, public safety, homeland security, environment and human service needs. The N.C. Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, which is located in the Governor's Office, will coordinate grant distribution. full story...

GOV. EASLEY REQUESTS FEDERAL DISASTER AID FOR 59 COUNTIES 10/3/2008
Gov. Mike Easley has asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture to declare 59 of North Carolina's 100 counties disaster areas because of drought-related crop losses. Agriculture Department Loss Assessment Reports show excessive agricultural losses for at least one major crop, and significant losses on corn, soybeans, hay, and pasture and other forage crops. Easley sent a letter to federal Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer today. full story...
